How to use Jamaican black castor oil for hair growth
The popularity of Jamaican black castor oil stemmed from its positive effects on treating thinning hair and hair loss. Bring back the glory of your hair by learning how to use Jamaican black castor oil for hair growth.
To maximize its full potential, proper instructions below must be followed. Applying JBCO might also become tedious if not prepared properly, so it is highly important to follow the steps below.
Prepare the JBCO treatment
Step 1 - Gather the materials you need for JBCO treatment
Applying JBCO to your hair is not an easy task if you don’t follow the right way to prepare it. To make everything easy and stress-free, prepare first the following materials:
- Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO)
- Seed oils (jojoba, avocado, coconut, etc.)
- Essential oils (Tea tree, rosemary, peppermint, ylang-ylang, etc.)
- Boiled water
- Medium size glass/ stainless bowl
- Small bowl
- Small glass jar with lid
- Eye dropper (optional)
- Spray bottle (Optional)
- Shower cap
- Towel
- Used/old clothes (optional)
Step 2 - Dilute the JBCO to a preferred seed oil (I recommend jojoba oil because of its purifying qualities)
The high viscosity of JBCO makes it hard to spread on hair so, it is better to dilute it with another oil that has a watery viscosity. The recommended ratio for this mixture is 1:1, so you need to mix one part of JBCO and one part of another seed oil.
You can also mix two kinds of essential oil for this mixture with a recommended ratio of 3:1:1. One of the more popular mixtures is 3 tbsp. JBCO; 1 tbsp. Jojoba oil; 1 tbsp. Coconut oil.
Step 3 - Add 2-3 drops of essential oil to your oil mixture
Most of the time, seed oils have a pungent smell, and some people feel nauseous when exposed to this odor. To mask this pungent smell, add 2-3 drops of essential oils (I recommend to use tea tree oil because of its purifying properties) to your oil mixture.
Step 4 - Transfer the oil mixture into the small glass jar
Pour all the oil mixture into the small glass jar and close the lid tightly. Shake the jar for 2-3 minutes. After shaking, remove the lid of the jar.
Warning: Be careful with handling the boiling water to avoid scald burns; do not use microwave the glass jar with oil mixture.
Step 5 - Warm the jar with oil mixture
Fill the bowl with hot water and submerge the glass jar with oil mixture into it. See to it that the water level is the same with the oil level inside the jar. Make sure that the jar is tightly sealed to prevent water from coming in.
Warming the oil mixture will further lower the viscosity of the oil making it easier to apply on the hair, and it also increases the efficacy of the treatment.
Step 6 - Transfer the warm oil mixture into a small bowl
Pour all the oil mixture into a small bowl for easy access during application. You can also transfer it to a bottle with eye dropper. You can use the dropper to drip the oil mixture into your scalp.
Apply the JBCO to your hair
Step 1 - Damp your hair with water
You can use a spray bottle with water to spray water into your scalp as a faster way to slightly wet your hair. Damp hair will make it easier for the oil to absorb into your hair.
Step 2 - Use a towel to cover your shoulder
The towel will protect your colds in case the oil will drip from your hair. You are also recommended to use old clothes if the oil percolates through the towel.
Step 3 - Apply the oil on your scalp
Dip your fingers into the oil mixture and rub it on your scalp for 3-5 minutes. Just use an amount enough to cover the tips of your fingers. Spread the oil carefully across your scalp and massage your head using small and circular motions for at least 5 minutes. For an easier application, you can also use an eye dropper to drip the oil mixture into your scalp and hair roots.
Step 4 - Apply the oil mixture to the rest of your hair
Scoop a relatively small amount of oil mixture using your fingers and spread it on your palms. Run your hands from your hair roots down to the tips. Distribute the oil on your hair equally by combing your hair using your fingers that are previously dip into the oil mixture.
Do not put too much oil in your hair, just use a small amount on first strokes and then gradually increase the amount to cover all your hair strands.
Step 5 - Use the shower cap to cover your hair
Loosely gather your hair on the top of your head and cover it with a shower cap. The shower cap will prevent your hair from drying out by trapping the heat inside. Leave the shower cap for 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Step 6 - Wet the towel with hot water and wrap it around your head
Soak the towel with warm water. After soaking, twist the towel to remove excess water. Wrap the warm towel around your head and secure it using a large hair clip or by just tucking the end of the towel under the turban. The heat provided by the warm towel will maximize the effect of the oil treatment. Remove the towel after 30 minutes - 1 hour.
Step 7 - Wash the oil out of your hair
Remove the oil from your hair after 30 minutes – 3 hours of oil treatment. If you can afford, you can leave the oil overnight to promote further absorption.
The oil in your hair is actually hard to remove so to lessen your struggles, you should condition your hair first before getting in the shower. Put a generous amount of condition in your hair. Massage the condition into your scalp and comb your hair using your fingers. Afterward, shampoo your hair using natural shampoo or mud-based shampoo.
Step 8 - Perform this oil treatment 1-2 times a week
You won’t see any significant effects after your first treatment. You need to repeat the steps above for four – five weeks in order to see the desired outcomes.
